It's a gritty noir tale set in 2054, and though it deals with cyberpunk themes such as Big Brother Is Watching and Sinister Surveillance, its not a complete dystopia and everything is actually quite shiny and clean. Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos series uses a lot of cyberpunk tropes, particularly Brawne Lamia's backstory—she's a very noir private eye, who joined the Hyperion Pilgrims after a cyber-entity asked her to figure out who had tried to murder him while he had taken on a human body, and why.

The genre's vision of a troubled future is often called the antithesis of the generally utopian visions of the future popular in the 1940s and 1950s. It's one of the cornerstones of this whole project. [Update: added to main category] Listening to the Reducers reminded me of this track from Garry Bushell's first-wave UK skinhead record conglomerate. Wikipedia is the original open-source online encyclopedia about everything, and of course they have a thorough entry on SF. 1st Global Conference Artificial Intelligence: Exploring Critical Issues was in October 20-22, 2003, Vienna, Austria; this link details the project.

That said, writers like Gibson, Sterling, Shiner, John Shirley, and Rudy Rucker have been reasonably content to have their novels marketed as "cyberpunk" fiction, and their more recent disavowal of connections to the label comes as much from their discomfort with the amount of imitative cyberpunk which has glutted the market—what one SF publisher calls the "cyberpunk sludge"—as from anything else. Modern civilization has fallen, and a new race of barbarians, descended from the world’s brutalized workers, has assumed power.

It can be classified as a cyberpunk film because it depicts a near-future urban dystopia where science and technology have progressed to a dangerous level, alongside terrible environmental degradation and societal collapse. Bland föregångarna till genren kan bland annat Aldous Huxley som skrev Du sköna nya värld 1932 och George Orwell som 1948 skrev 1984 nämnas. If you want to post something in the gif thread, do it. According to Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature (1995), cyberpunk is defined as: “A science-fiction subgenre comprising works characterized by countercultural antiheroes trapped in a dehumanized, high-tech future.” In the periodical Amazing Science Fiction Stories (1983), Bruce Bethke published a story entitled “Cyberpunk,” coining the phrase from an amalgam of the words cybernetics—the art of replacing human body parts with computerized ones—and punk—the musical and cultural youth movement of the 1970s and 1980s.

Lovecraft's The Shadow Out of Time offered a 1936 scenario in which the consciousnesses of scholars from all eras were brought to an ancient, alien library to write manuscripts for the collection. I’m not saying that the Cyberpunk authors didn’t have anything new or valuable to contribute, but I really think that your discussion was incomplete without any mention of those earlier authors. How did this collection affect you personally, if it did? But Gibson is after more, the sense that the Japanese are a society that - like Americans - happily plow under their past in the pursuit of the future.

Virtual Technology seemed liked the way to go in the 80s (and a lot of companies tried to bring it about) but now we are talking about Augmented Reality. And I got exactly what I’d been promised. Discogs.com comes through with a short bio for Q Lazzarus. “Goodbye Horses” was featured in Silence Of The Lambs, and you can watch Buffalo Bill every week on Monk as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer. Science fiction has pretty much exactly this problem--a history of at least a century, arguably two if you're in the "Frankenstein was the first science fiction novel" camp.
